Migraine and Q10: A breakthrough in natural treatment

Migraine is a complex neurological disorder characterised by recurrent, often unilateral, pulsating headaches and may be accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light (photophobia) and sensitivity to noise (phonophobia). Migraine attacks can severely interfere with daily life and significantly reduce the quality of life of those affected. Despite intensive research, the exact cause of migraine has not yet been fully elucidated, but genetic predisposition, environmental influences and neuronal and vascular factors all play a role.

Current research on migraine shows that older theories attributing the symptoms to fluctuations in blood flow to the brain are now outdated. Modern research focuses more on the sources of the problem and has found that chemical compounds and hormones, particularly serotonin and oestrogen, play an important role in the pain sensitivity of migraine patients. It is believed that migraine pain is caused by waves of activity from groups of excitable brain cells that release chemicals such as serotonin, which can constrict blood vessels. Serotonin is necessary for communication between nerve cells and can cause blood vessels throughout the body to constrict.

In addition to the hormonal and chemical factors that can influence migraine, research has also identified a number of triggers that can cause migraine attacks in some people. These triggers include:

  • Stress and emotional factors
  • Biological and environmental conditions such as hormonal changes or exposure to certain lighting conditions or odours
  • Fatigue and changes in sleep patterns
  • Glare or flickering light
  • Weather changes
  • Certain foods and beverages

In recent years, interest in the role of dietary supplements and vitamins in migraine therapy has grown. One of the substances that has become the focus of research is coenzyme Q10 (Q10), a substance produced naturally in the body that plays a key role in cellular energy production and also acts as an antioxidant.

What is Q10 and how does it work?

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble molecule found in the mitochondria of all cells. It is involved in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell's main source of energy. In addition, Q10 protects cells from oxidative stress by neutralising free radicals. This is particularly important for the brain, which is especially susceptible to oxidative stress due to its high energy requirements and high fat content.

Q10 for migraine: what does the research say?

Studies have shown that Q10 can be effective in some people who suffer from migraine attacks. A randomised, placebo-controlled study published in the journal Neurology found that taking 300 mg of Q10 daily for three months significantly reduced the frequency, severity and duration of migraine attacks compared to placebo. Participants also reported an improved quality of life (Rozen, T.D. et al., 2002).[2]

Another study, published in the European Neurology Journal, supports these findings and shows that daily supplementation with Q10 can reduce the occurrence of migraine attacks. Interestingly, it has also been observed that low plasma Q10 levels may correlate with an increased frequency of migraine attacks (Sándor, P.S. et al., 2005).[3]

How can Q10 be integrated into migraine therapy?

Although the results are promising, it is important to emphasise that Q10 is not effective in every migraine patient and should not be considered a substitute for conventional therapies. Instead, it can be considered as a complementary treatment, especially for patients who do not respond to previously used medications or who cannot tolerate them due to side effects.

The optimal dosage of Q10 varies; doses between 150 and 300 mg per day were frequently used in studies.
plantoCAPS Q10 | ACTIVE capsules are an innovative way to benefit from the positive effects of coenzyme Q10. Developed using a carefully considered formula, these capsules contain not only coenzyme Q10, but also a range of other ingredients that promote health.

Thanks to the synergistic blend of these ingredients, plantoCAPS Q10 | ACTIVE capsules offer a holistic supplement designed to optimise energy production, strengthen the immune system and improve cell protection.

Supplementing with coenzyme Q10 could be a promising option for migraine sufferers, especially given its favourable safety profile and its ability to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of migraines in most cases. Further research is needed, however, to fully understand the effectiveness of Q10 in migraine therapy and to determine which patients could benefit most from it.

[2] The study by Sándor et al. (2005), published in the journal Neurology, investigated the effectiveness of coenzyme Q10 in migraine prophylaxis through a randomised, placebo-controlled trial involving 42 migraine patients. The results showed that, compared to placebo, CoQ10 significantly reduced the frequency of attacks, days with headache and days with nausea in the third month of treatment. CoQ10 was well tolerated and the 50% response rate for attack frequency was significantly higher in the CoQ10 arm than in the placebo arm.

[3] Another study presented on the website of the European Medical Journal investigated the combination of coenzyme Q10, riboflavin, butterbur and relaxation techniques in migraine prophylaxis. This randomised controlled trial found that the combination of these elements significantly reduced the frequency and intensity of migraines and that the combination treatment was more effective than any single therapy.
